Tesla’s Elon Musk runs Bill Gates on a Tesla Short
Tesla (TSLA) – Get a Tesla Inc . report CEO Elon Musk thinks he’s saving the world with his electric vehicle and his solar efforts (and he probably does exactly that).
Microsoft founder (MSFT) – Get a Microsoft report Bill Gates followed a more traditional path of philanthropy. His foundation, which he runs with his wife, Grace, Melinda, has dedicated billions of dollars to solving inequalities around the world. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has worked on everything from bringing vaccines to parts of the world that don’t have them, making sure people have clean water, and all kinds of projects designed to protect the planet.
The Gates Foundation has a clear philosophy when it comes to how it plans to achieve its goals.
“We can’t achieve our goals alone. We work with businesses, government, and nonprofits, and each partner plays a specific role in accelerating progress,” the foundation shares on its homepage.
Bill Gates had hoped that Musk would consider participating in those efforts and the two were planning to meet, according to a widely reported text series that Musk has since confirmed.
It was a fun mundane conversation until Musk threw a bomb and made a realistic version of a professional wrestler hitting his partner by hitting him in the head with a steel chair.
Musk really hates Twitter shorts
Musk has generally taken a very negative approach to anyone who is downgrading Tesla stock. He repeated this approach with Gates and halted their planned meeting because Gates had an important short stand against the electric car company, which he tweeted.

In the script, which Musk confirmed to be true, the Tesla CEO questioned Gates’ commitment to the environment due to his short tenure at Tesla.
“Sorry, but I can’t take your philanthropy seriously about climate change when you have a very short position against Tesla, the company that is doing everything it can to solve climate change,” Musk apparently texted Gates, who did not confirm exchange.
Musk then completed his dismissal of Gates by sharing a photo of him on Twitter with a rather sordid (and deeply offensive) joke.
Selling is basically a bet against a stock. It’s taking a position that pays off if the stock price goes down.
Musk forgive himself
Musk tends to take a publicly “you’re dead to me” approach to anyone who wears Tesla clothes. He has made it clear that he considers the bet not only against his company, but against its environmental efforts. Tesla outlines its environmental mission in its annual report on ESG.
At Tesla, we strive to be the best in every metric relevant to our mission
Accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy. in order to maximize
our impact, we plan to continue increasing our production volumes and
access to our products. In more realistic terms, this means that by
2030 We aim to sell 20 million electric cars annually (compared to
to 0.5 million in 2020) as well as to deploy 1,500 GWh of energy storage
Annually (compared to 3 GWh in 2020
Musk was a leading proponent of not only electric vehicles, but also solar energy. He has also been a fan in and out of both Bitcoin and Dogecoin, two cryptocurrencies that have been heavily criticized for their environmental impact.
The CEO of Tesla (eventually) reversed his stance on both cryptocurrencies, dropping Bitcoin as a means of payment for Tesla.
Musk clearly gives himself room for billions of dollars in mistakes, but he’s taken a less tolerant approach to Gates, and while his theater may bolster Musk’s maverick image, what really happened is that the Tesla CEO missed an opportunity. To work with Gates to advance the two men’s environmental goals.
