DeLorean EV revealed – a 4-seater

DeLorean Motor Company has officially revealed the upcoming DeLorean EV, an all-new car of the 1980’s stainless-steel classic sports car made famous through the Back to the Future movie trilogy and premiered in February.. The new and all-electric DMC is working on Reviving the “Medusa” sedan concept that the original DeLorean Motor Company began developing before the automaker went bankrupt in 1982. Although the Medusa, known internally as the DMC-24, was supposed to have four independent cars instead, the DeLorean will feature EV with gullwing doors Two large, electronically operated gullwing doors each display the first and second rows of seats. Here’s everything we know about the car so far.

The DeLorean EV is targeting a 100 kWh battery pack which should provide north of 300 miles of range and dual-motor, all-wheel drive setup. It’ll accelerate from 0-60 mph in 2.99 seconds, and 0-88 mph (you know why!) in 4.35 seconds. The top speed is expected to reach 155 miles per hour. Prices are expected to be in the $175,000 range, and production is expected to begin at DMC’s new facility in San Antonio, Texas in the next two years. Note that these specs are included in the Alpha5’s “Basic Performance Model,” which appears to be the name of the new DeLorean model.

This new incarnation of DMC (which shares the name only with the original company of John DeLorean) worked with Giorgetto Giugiaro’s ItalDesign on the new EV look. ItalDesign also designed the original DeLorean, a wedge-shaped car with stainless steel body panels and effortless skyscraper doors designed to allow easy ingress and egress for tall drivers (like John DeLorean himself, who was 6 feet 4 inches tall ). Its stainless steel exterior ensures that its chassis will never rust, and its current 2.85-liter V6 engine ensures it doesn’t have the performance to match its looks. It was planned—with some examples installed in production DeLoreans (such as the VIN 502), but the company didn’t hold out long enough to officially put the upgraded engine into production. Approximately 9,000 DeLoreans were manufactured between 1981-1983. I thought roughly 6000 of them remain today, and both original and remanufactured parts are still available in bulk from the DMC Classic. Believe me on it: I owned a 1982 model from 1999-2012.
