Every penny counts these days.

the main points

  • Gas prices are at an all-time high, driving the average American an extra $1,000 at the pump this year.
  • By driving wisely, removing excess weight in your vehicle, and keeping your vehicle in shape, you can reduce the amount of gas you use by up to 75%.

The price of gas just hit a new milestone: the average gallon price is above $4 in every state for the first time. According to AAA, the average price was $4.59, which is a new record and more than 50% more than last year.

California residents face the highest prices, with gas coming in at $6.07 per gallon. The average American is paying nearly $1,000 more for gas this year. By following the gas mileage guidelines, you can reduce the amount of gas you use by 25% to 75%, saving your hard-earned money at the pump.

Avoid aggressive driving

Speed, rapid acceleration, and braking can reduce mileage on gasoline by 15% to 30% on highway speeds. Aggressive driving in choppy traffic is even worse, costing you anywhere from 10% to 40% of your fuel mileage. Reasonable driving will help you save on the pump and will be safer for you and others on the road.

Fuel Economy: 10% – 40%

Gas Savings: $0.46 – $1.84

Avoid speed

Gas mileage typically decreases significantly above 50 mph. Studies show that for every 5 mph you drive more than 50 mph, it’s like paying an extra $0.31 per gallon. By driving at a slower speed of 5 to 10 miles per hour, you can reduce your gas mileage by 7% to 14%.

Fuel Economy: 7% – 14%

Gas Saving: $0.32 – $0.64

For every extra 100 pounds in your car, it reduces the mileage on gasoline by 1%. Carrying goods on your roof not only increases weight, but also increases the aerodynamic drag. A large luggage compartment can reduce fuel economy by 10% to 25% when driving at more than 65 mph, from 6% to 17% when driving on the highway, and from 2% to 8% in the city. When driving, remove the luggage compartment and remove the extra weight.

Fuel Economy: 2% – 17%

Gas Savings: $0.09 – $0.78

Keep your car in good condition

Keeping the engine tuned properly can improve your gas mileage by 4%. Non-inflated tires can reduce fuel economy by about 0.2% per 1 psi. By keeping your tires properly inflated, you can increase your gasoline mileage by 0.6%.

Fuel Economy: 0.6% – 4.6%

Gas Savings: $0.03 – $0.21

total savings

By following these tips, you can increase your mileage on gasoline anywhere from 19.6% to 75.6%. This combination can save $0.90 up to $3.47 in gas equivalent savings per gallon. This can amount to savings ranging from $540 to $2000 annually.

Other tips for saving fuel include choosing more efficient cars and combining missions into one trip. Fuel economy is worse with a cold engine than with a warm engine. Several short trips from a cold start can consume twice as much fuel as a longer multi-purpose trip covering the same distance. Not only can these tips help you save money in today’s high gas price environment, they can also help you save in the long run.
