Strawberry recall 2022: FDA investigating outbreak of hepatitis A associated with fresh organic strawberries from Fresh Kampo and HEB

LOS ANGELES (CABC) — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is investigating an outbreak of hepatitis A associated with fresh organic strawberries.

Participating brands were Fresh Kampo and HEB.

Anyone who bought these strawberries between March 5 and April 25, 2022, and has frozen them for later consumption, should throw them away.

If you’re not sure what brand you bought, when you bought your strawberries, or where you bought them before you frozen them, discard strawberries, says the Food and Drug Administration.

They are sold at a number of stores including Aldi, Sprouts, Trader Joe’s, WinCo Foods and Walmart, according to the Food and Drug Administration.

Tracking investigations show that cases in California, Minnesota, and Canada report buying fresh, organic, FreshKampo or HEB-branded strawberries before you become sick.

The dates for the onset of the disease range from March 28 to April 30, 2022.

Hepatitis A symptoms usually occur within 15 to 50 days after eating or drinking contaminated food or water, and may include fatigue, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, jaundice, dark urine, and pale stools. The FDA says in some cases, especially in children under the age of six, hepatitis A infection may be asymptomatic.

People with hepatitis A usually recover completely within one to two weeks; However, in rare cases, hepatitis A may become chronic, causing a relapse of the infection, according to the Food and Drug Administration. Chronic hepatitis A infection can lead to more serious health problems, including liver failure and death.

We urge you to contact your doctor if you think you have eaten these strawberries in the past few weeks, and/or are experiencing symptoms of hepatitis A after eating these fresh organic strawberries.
