How does Spruce Banking work
Spruce is a new fintech platform created by tax preparation company H&R Block.
H&R Block is not a bank. However, the spending and savings accounts are insured by the Federal Insurance Corporation (FDIC) through Metabank, Sprouse’s banking partner. The money deposited in your account will be safe. You will also have access to more than 55,000 ATMs without fees through the Allpoint network.
You do not need to be a H&R Block customer to become part of Spruce. You can register online or through a mobile phone.
With Spruce, you will open checking and saving accounts. At this time, the banking platform does not allow you to open a Spruce or Spruce checking account alone.
The Spruce mobile app is available on the Apple Store and Google Play Store, which has 5 stars but limited customer reviews.
Customer service is available by phone or online from 5 a.m. to midnight on a CT scan.
Is Spruce Banking Trustworthy?
We usually include reviews from the Better Business Bureau to help explain how the business handles customer issues and to address transparency. Spruce Banking is a new banking platform so it is not rated BBB yet.
Since the accounts are also insured by MetaBank, we also include the bank’s BBB rating for some additional perspective. MetaBank has a B rating because it has 775 complaints against the company.
BBB ratings do not necessarily guarantee that your relationship with the bank will be perfect. Consider reading customer reviews online or talking to customers to see if Spruce Banking might work for you.
How does Spruce Banking compare
We compared Spruce Banking with two other online banking platforms: Chime and One.
The three banking platforms do not require a minimum opening, deposit, or monthly fee. You can also see financial goals through various savings features.
Choosing between these three platforms will likely depend on what you prioritize in your banking experience.
You may prefer Spruce over other banking platforms if you want cashback on some purchases. Cashback rewards are provided by Dosh. There are over 10,000 retailers offering rewards.
If you’re more interested in earning interest, it’s a drop between Chime or One.
One pays the highest interest rate of all three platforms, but the amount you will earn will vary depending on your account balance. If you have a high account balance, you may also want to consider other options.
Chime pays a good rate on its savings account, but has access to fewer fee-free ATMs than Spruce or One.
