By sharing an Uber ride, you can save up to 20% on the total fare price.

the main points

  • Uber canceled its co-ride capabilities at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
  • The rideshare company is again offering shared rides in nine cities across the US

Many people rely on ride-sharing services to get around when traveling and in their daily lives. But these services can get expensive. You may use ride-sharing services less frequently to reduce your spending.

Uber is bringing back shared rides, so some users will be able to save money on transportation costs. Find out if you can cut back on your spending.

Until recently, when you asked for a ride with Uber, you and the driver would be the only person in the car. But this was not always the case. The rideshare company used to offer Uber Pool, a rideshare service that was better for your wallet and possibly the planet.

With this service, users can share the flight with other passengers and pay a lower price. But this shared transportation service disappeared during the early days of the pandemic. Now, shared flight options are available again in select cities, and the service will operate under a new name.

Introducing UberX Share

On June 21, 2022, Uber announced that its ride-sharing service, UberX Share, is available in nine US cities. Passengers will get a discount up front and can save up to 20% off the total fare. With this service, passengers will reach their destinations no later than 8 minutes later than the non-shared UberX flight.

Currently, UberX Share will be available in the following cities:

  • Chicago
  • Indianapolis
  • Los Angeles
  • New York City
  • Phoenix
  • Pittsburgh
  • Portland
  • San Diego
  • San Francisco

Uber plans to expand to additional cities later this summer.

The company listened to driver and passenger feedback and made improvements to make the shared ride service run more smoothly. Riders will now only be matched if they are traveling in the same direction, reducing delays.

Can you save money on transportation costs?

If you use Uber, this shared ride service can help you save money. Once UberX Share expands and becomes available in more regions, you may be able to pay less for your rides.

If you’re not in a hurry and don’t mind sharing a ride with a stranger, this could be a big win for your wallet. In addition, you are guaranteed to participate in some interesting conversations.

Other ways to save money during transportation

You are not alone if you are suffering from the negative financial effects of high gas prices. Across the United States, gas prices are at all-time highs.

According to AAA, today’s national average for a gallon of regular gasoline is $4.96. Many Americans are looking for ways to save on transportation costs.

Here are some ways to reduce your transportation spending:

Use public transportation. While not all parts of the country have reliable and abundant public transportation, some do. Price your public transportation options and check availability in your area to see if this is an option for you.

Reframe the way you run errands. If possible, group nearby missions on the same flight. This may help you reduce your vehicle usage and save fuel.

Ride a bike or walk more. If you live in an area where you can walk or bike safely, you may consider using alternative transportation other than driving. You can keep more money in your pocket and do more exercise.

Pay attention to the price at the pump. You may be able to save some money by filling up gas stations that offer lower prices. The savings may seem insignificant, but they can add up over time.

Use rewards credit cards. With the right credit card, you can earn valuable rewards. Gas credit cards can help you reduce your spending with gas discounts and cashback savings.
