Biden brags about dropping gas prices to less than $4.50 per gallon
President Biden described falling gas prices in a series of tweets over the weekend as the national average gallon of gas fell below $4.50.
The national average for a gallon of gas is now $4.36, according to the American Transportation Association (AAA), down from a high of $5 a gallon last month.
Biden, who suffers from declining approval ratings, chirp First Friday that gas prices fell 60 cents over the past 38 days, marking the fifth consecutive week of decline.
followed it up with a tweet Sunday, noting that it is now 65 cents over a 40-day period.
“I grew up in a family where if the price of gas went up, we felt it,” Chief chirp on his personal account. “Gas prices have been down since mid-June, and should continue to fall in the coming days and weeks. I know those extra dollars and cents mean something.”
Gas prices have risen since last year, hitting record highs during the spring and summer and climbing above $6 a gallon in states like California, Hawaii, Alaska, Nevada and Washington.
Biden’s approval ratings have fallen to around 39 percent, in part due to frustration with inflation, as Republicans take advantage of economic woes before the midterms in November.
The Biden administration has largely blamed supply chain disruptions, Russia’s war in Ukraine and oil companies for rising gas prices and rising inflation.
“With oil prices down 20% from their June highs, it is unacceptable that prices at the pump are only halved” Biden tweeted on Saturday. “It’s time for the oil and gas companies to pass these lower costs on to the Americans.”
In a press release last week, AAA said West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude fell to $102.26, down from $109 a barrel during the spring.
AAA indicated that gas demand increased slightly last week and was closer to July 2020 levels. At the same time, the number of barrels of crude oil jumped by 3.5 million barrels to a total of 228 million barrels, “indicating that lower demand led to inventory growth last week”.
“If gas demand remains low as inventories increase, coupled with persistently low crude prices, drivers are likely to see a dip in pump prices,” the organization’s analysts wrote.
Biden said on Saturday that lower gas prices saved the average American about $30 a month.
“An extra 60 cents a gallon in your pocket is a good thing,” said the chief chirp. “It’s the breathing room.”
