Air India has revealed its long-term vision for the company which it hopes to transform into a world-class product centered around Indian values. The carrier recently issued a statement detailing its short- and long-term plans and various initiatives already underway following its acquisition by the Tata Group.
Dawn of a new era
The privatization of Air India came with huge expectations from Indian citizens who wished to see the airline return to its glorious past and join the ranks of other world-class airlines. Fully aware of those hopes, AI has revealed a roadmap for multi-stage transformation – a plan called Vihaan.AI, which signals the dawn of a new era in Sanskrit.

Fully aware of the challenges it faces in the transformation, Air India has set key objectives and has given itself 5 years to achieve them in phases. Include the main milestones to reach “Growing its network and fleet, developing a completely revamped offering to customers, improving reliability and on-time performance, and taking a leading position in technology, sustainability and innovation, while investing aggressively behind top industry talent.”
The airline’s president, Campbell Wilson, and other senior executives have revealed the plan to the entire organization and will reach out to employees across regions, departments and locations through a series of physical and hybrid sessions in the coming days and weeks.

Senior leaders received extensive feedback from Air India staff to learn what they want from the airline and how they envision the company in the future. After discussion, it was decided that Vihaan.AI should focus on five main themes:
- Exceptional customer experience
- powerful operations
- The best talent in the industry
- Industry leadership
- Commercial efficiency and profitability
To achieve this, the airline has identified areas in need of immediate overhaul (the taxi stage) and a focus in the medium to long term, such as scale creation – including capturing up to 30% of the local market share – to become a global industry leader ( Takeoff and climb stages).

“This is the beginning of a historic transformation for Air India, and the dawn of a new era. We are laying the foundation for a brave new Air India aircraft, with a renewed sense of purpose and incredible momentum. Vihaan.AI is our transformative plan to make Air India the world-class airline it once was, and it deserves To be again. We are highly focused on being recognized as a world class airline serving global customers, with an Indian heart of pride.”
Initiatives are underway
Even when the plan was revealed to the staff, several steps are already underway for the eventual transformation of Air India.
Wilson highlighted that a large number of initiatives, such as refurbishing cabins, serviceable seats, and in-flight entertainment systems, are already under consideration. Adopting proactive maintenance and optimizing flight schedules to improve on-time performance is also an area that is currently being improved.

Air India is also in the process of expanding its fleet to add capacity to the domestic and international networks and has embarked on a process of digitization of many of its departments for smooth operations.
The plans, indeed, are noble, but so are the expectations of customers from Air India. Here we wish them all the best.
